Gratitude Kit ***PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST!!!

I know this is a long post, but please read the entire thing:

I've had quite a bit going on and hadn't planned on making a kit until Christmas. But then something happened to my friend's baby that I wanted to share with you.

One of my best friends, Kari, is a mother of three. Her oldest son Caleb (age 6) has Down Syndrome, then she has a 3 year old son named Gunner, and finally a 7 month old baby named Bree (they call her Breezy). Kari and I had the exact same due date with our babies and I lucked out and delivered Claire one week before her.

For the past couple of weeks they saw these bruises under Baby Bree's eyes (they thought one of their sons had rough housed her). But then after 2 weeks the bruises didn't go away. After bringing her into their pediatrician, she was immediately sent to the hospital for testing and was diagnosed this past Monday with the highest stage of neuroblastoma cancer. The cancer has been found around her spine, in the liver, pancreas and bone marrow.

I just can't believe it. Already they are dealing with the worries of raising a Down Syndrome boy, a 3 year old boy (which is a challenge in itself), and now their 7 month old has cancer.

She started chemotherapy today.

To let you know what kind of a mom Kari is, this was from her most recent blog post (and this was written PRIOR to them knowing Breezy has cancer):

Yesterday was a great day. It was one of those Saturday's where you are busy but have those moments where you wish you could freeze time. We took some time to go down to the park as a family. We packed some snacks and headed to the neighborhood park and played there in the beautiful weather. My kids were having so much fun running up and down the playground, playing soccer with their Dad and running all over the place. I was loving holding and cuddling with Breezy. We were watching the boys have fun, roll down the grassy hill and biff it every couple of times. Caleb even ate grass a few times, but got up laughing each time. I also enjoyed watching Justin and his boys run around and play together. It's so much fun to see how the boys love their Daddy. And Bree has such a huge crush on Justin. Every time he walks in the room, she gets a huge smile on her face and giggles so shyly. So sweet.

Yesterday was just one of those moments in time where I loved being together with my family and truly wanting to freeze time just so that I could look at each of my children's faces and memorize them before they grow up on me. I know life goes so fast and there are some days when I can't wait for the day to be over and to have a moment to myself, but I know this will pass me by in a flash if I don't appreciate the little moments. So, here's to our little family...enjoying the here and now, relishing the sweet times and loving each moment!
This family is amazing and has always had the most positive outlook on life. As I rocked Claire to sleep last night, I tried to think of what I could do to help Justin and Kari.

And then I thought of something that people had done for me when Claire had her brain surgery. My mother-in-law's friend had gotten many other people to help donate money to buy gifts for our family. Complete strangers had pitched in and gotten things for me for my stays at the hospital (crossword puzzles, snacks, socks, etc.). They got DVD's and toys for our other kids. They got us gift cards. As much as we appreciated the gifts, it was the fact that these were complete strangers who had donated so much.

So I decided to make a kit called Gratitude.

I tried to make it a Thanksgiving theme so it would actually be one you might want to use. But truthfully, this kit is dedicated to Kari and the wonderful mother she is.

Here is what I am asking of you:

I would like to be able to put together a gift basket to this amazing family. It will not cure their daughter's cancer, but it will lift their spirits. If you could donate even $1, then every single penny donated will go towards the Cook family: Justin, Kari, Caleb, Gunner and Baby Bree. I will do this for a couple of weeks.

On the upper righthand side of my blog is a PayPal Donate button. Just click on it, enter your amount and you are finished. **If you do not have a PayPal account, then you can pay with a credit card. Just click on the donate button, then you'll see instructions on the bottom lefthand side. (Or email me if you prefer to mail a check and I'll get you my address). If you want to email me a message that I can put from you in the gift basket, then please feel free to do so (or if you want to just post a reply to this post I can get it from there). If there is something specific that you want your money to be used towards, please let me know.

Thank you so much.Download free "Gratitude" kit here:

Oh Summer, I sit here in tears as I read this. What I thought were my troubles only moments ago seem trivial in comparison. My heart breaks for Kari and her family.

I have only recently began visiting your blog, but in this short time I have come to know that you are such a caring and giving person. I have enjoyed all your freebies that you graciously have offered us. And now when you ask for something from us, you do so to support a friend in need. You are an angel! Please let Kari know that she and her blessed family are in my prayers!!
hugs, Jami

I just started visiting your blog too and I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Just want to give some hope: I have a friend whose daughter was diagnosed with the same cancer about 20 years ago (at about 9 months of age). From what I understand the younger the diagnosis, the better the chance of beating it. My friend's daughter is a healthy beautiful young woman who is totally cancer free. I hope your friend is granted a similar healing story. Best wishes!

Summer, I do not have paypal either, but I would like you to know that I am adding little Breezy and her family to our family prayer list. My heart is breaking for this family that you have brought to us. I pray that God will touch Breezy and heal her of this cancer, that He will give the Dr.s wisdom and that he will guide them as they treat her, and that He will give her family the strength to face the long battle ahead of them, and that when they feel overwhelmed that He will send strength to them through friends and family. Amen.

Bree and her family are truly blessed to have a friend like you. Thank you for sharing this with us and I know that there will be many, many people praying for them because of it.

Secondary to unemployment, I can only offer my heart full of prayers and hope for her. Our second son had a life-threatening illness and many surgeries as a child, but he pulled through and is now 25 years old. Another son was in a coma for 4 days after an allergic reaction to a dental procedure. I promise you strength and love will get you all through this. Best wishes and good luck!

Right now I don't even have $1 for myself but if you're willing to make auctions for handmade (papercrafts) items, I can work a few things next week and I can send them to you directly for you to auction. I offer to send them to you because if I don't I know it will take me some time to send directly to winners.

I am facing hard times economically, but I do have a few things around home I can use to make a donation. So, if you're okay with it...please contact me throught my blog (I need to authorize the comments for them to appear) and that way I'll work something out for you.

Take care and hugs for what you're going through with your own child and that of your friend.

My grand-daughter has had a tough time adjusting to Kindergarten. She has not been an angel as she struggles to transition to her new situation. Instantly, however, all of that seems to have been put in the proper perspective. She is healthy, bright and independent. I pray that a month from now Kari and her family are dealing with that kind of problem rather than the agony they are dealing with today.

my 5 year old son was diagnosed with kidney cancer two months ago so i really feel for kari and her family. we've been in the hospital twice, had one surgery that turned into a biopsy-only, and are going through chemo. another surgery is planned for early december and then more months of chemo. it is really affecting our whole family, that's why i say 'we' are going through these things. i'm glad you are going to make a basket for the whole family. please tell them i wish them peace of mind during these difficult times.

I too was so excited to see that you had a new kit out, then when I came to the blog and read the post, my heart just broke. Any hospital time with young children is exhausting and emotionally draining, even for less serious problems. For something of this magnitude, I can't begin to understand the drain on the families resources, spirits, and energy. They are in our prayers and I would love to do what I can to send people to your blog to help this family.

Allison Evans Brown said...

I donated. I cried reading your post. I love my children and could only imagine what your friend could be going through. I pray that everything will turn out fine and that Kari and her family will grow strong throughout these trials. I hope she knows that the Lord never gives a trial that HE KNOWS she can't handle.

May our Heavenly Father bless her. What a sweetheart she is. Her park adventure was amazing. She is an example to me and you are too generous to make a kit just for her and her family.

I hope all goes well with you, Claire, and the rest of your family also. I keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

I just read what you went through recently, Summer, and I'm so sorry for both of you mommies (and your families).... For your friend, if they don't have a lot of money, I'd love to see a g/c to a spa. If she's the type that does that stuff a lot, then I figured she'll keep tending herself, and maybe the money should go more towards her kiddies.

Either way, bless you for doing this for her, and I'll keep her and her baby in my prayers. And you and baby Claire too.

I don't know why so many people are given such harsh challenges...she certainly has enough on her plate already. I'm sure there's a bigger plan and I hope her life brightens very, very soon.

Not much but it's my weekly "digi" money. Kari's family will be in my thoughts and prayers every day. The older I get the more I can't believe how unfair life is for some. I keep asking God what is supposed to come out of all the pain... I mean there has to be some point to it all right :)

I will pass the word around for everyone to pray for a Miracle!!!

Thanks you so much for your kits. Your designs are really beautiful!

Summer - I love reading your blog and your kits are wonderful. You are such a generous person and amazing friend to this for this family. I have donated what I can and hope that it brings this family some bright moments during this time. Please keep us up to date.

I was recently sent to this blog in response to a friend who has followed your blog and wanted me to come and read this story of courage, hope, faith, and love. I wish all the best for little Bree...I have a 7 month old of my own and cried just thinking about Kari and what she is going through as her mother. My donation was small...all that we can afford, but please let Kari and her family know that they are in my thoughts and prayers. God Bless that dear family.

My heart goes out to Kari and her family. I just can't imagine how they are dealing with all of this. And, for you to take this one with all of your own troubles just shows what a generous, caring, and giving person you are. Please use the $10 I donated in any way you want to help this family. Hugs to you and to them.

Prayers and hope to your friend's family. When I try to imagine what they are going through it makes me hurt all over. Our God is great and will carry them through this.

What a wonderful thing you are doing. My heart goes out to Kari and her family and I hope my small donation can be of some help to this family in their time of crisis. I just wanted to let you know that I have been following your blog for a couple of months now and I find you and your family a true inspiration. Kari is very lucky to have a wonderful friend like you to help her through this time of need.

I am getting ready to make my donation but wanted to give a little bit of my own story. My oldest son was 18 months when he was diagnosed with ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) and as a mother I was scared to pieces! They initially thought he had leukemia because of all the bruising but thankfully it wasn't. There was a chance he would have had to have his spleen removed but his platelet count kept rising and after a long two years of oncology visits, he was free from the disease. Hope, prayer and a lot of support helped get me through it. So we will all pray for little Breezy and hope the donations will help this family especially when finances start to fall short. I know they will choose to use this donation for whatever is needed to help get them through these tough times.
Big Hugs.

Summer, thank you for that post. I can't possibly imagine what you friend is going through. I just read a book about a girl that was diagnosed with luekemia when she was 2, and it breaks my heart that children have to go through things like this. I can't give much, but I hope that the small donations will combine to bring them some hope. I wish them the best. And thank you for sharing and helping.

I was looking for a Give Thanks kit that I could use to make a decoration for my holiday shelf this month when I ran across this post. It really touched me. I have more Gratitude for my blessings. I have a four year old son (just as bad as a three year old if not worse) and he has been a challenge for me lately. But nothing in comparison.

Thank you for sharing your friends story. My heart goes out to them and I hope all goes well with their sweet Bree.

Summer, You are such a great friend and a good example. This reminds me of the conference talk about angels around us. I have tried to donate a couple of times, but am not sure if it went through. I'll check my statement and then donate again if it didn't work. Our prayers have included Bree and her family. Thanks for this opportunity to help.

Love that you are trying to help. We have a 4 yr. old in our church ward going thru this awful treatment also and we just want to take away some burden. Maybe a gift card for gas will help as the many trips to the hospital will add up. We are in Memphis where the great St. Jude is so let me know if they have to come here. We will be praying for them. Thanks for the opportunity to contribute a lil.

Dear Summer,

Please extend my thoughts and prayers to this beautiful family. I have been through so much over the past few months; however, nothing can compare to the pain and anguish felt when a child is afflicted with something like this. I am so saddened right now, but rest assured my thoughts and prayers will be with your friend's family.

I lost my job that I was with for over 8 years in Aug and I am a single mom of two kids. Things are so difficult right now, but I have made a donation that I hope will help in some way. If your donations are still being accepted in the next few weeks, I will most certainly come back. Please, please keep us posted on beautiful Breezy's status.

I will spread the word to EVERYONE! I will send anyone and everyone I know to your blog; together we can all stick together and help this beautiful family.

God Bless,

Candice S.

Dear Summer, I am so grateful to you.
First, I found you through a friend recommending your blog for some free papers.
Second, I downloaded your Limeade kit, and through that started a new past time of digi scrap-booking.
Thirdly, I used your papers to make some cards using them for the background.
Fourthly, you became my first purchase (or should I say donation) through PayPal.

Your generosity knows no bounds and I am grateful, for you are one of the good guys. My donation for your friend is small, I am sorry I can't give more, but my thoughts and prayers for your friend, her family and yours as well, are overflowing. Please wish your friend well and choose wisely for her gift of love that you offer her.

Hugs, Teresa
