Believe kit

****Please read this entire post!

My sister and I were talking just two days ago on the phone. She was telling me about a tragic story that happened to one of her dear friends. Her friend is named Kari, and she and her husband Skyler, a fire fighter, have 3 young children (ages 4, 2, and 10 months). Skyler went elk hunting with his friend a few nights ago and while sleeping in a tent it was terribly stormy outside. Winds of 60 mph caused a tree to fall and it landed on Skyler, killing him instantly.

I don't even know this family personally, but I have been thinking about them ever since. How hard that must be to lose their father, and for Kari to lose her husband. And even worse that it happened so close to Christmas. My sister has been able to help Kari by going over to be with her and give her some support. But she said to me, "I just don't know how what she's going to do for money."

So I told her that although I hadn't planned on making my Christmas kit until next week (I've been busy doing other things and my brother gets married this weekend), that I would make it today and get it on my blog to hopefully start getting some donations for this sweet family.

My sister told Kari's sister that I would be doing this, and so her sister is the one who provided the pictures and she also wrote this to put on my blog:

"Skylar was the kind of guy who was never looking to receive credit for the countless acts of service he performed in his lifetime. It wasn't uncommon for the neighbors to come home to freshly manicured yards and he was always the first one to jump up after family dinner on Sunday and start washing the dishes. He loved being with his family more than anything. He was a dedicated father and husband, a genuine friend, and had a great love for all things outdoors. He was a great example to us all. Skylar is survived by his wife, Kari and three children Slade, Daisy and Maylee."
I had known I wanted my Christmas kit to be called "Believe." And the whole purpose in my mind for naming it was to believe in Santa Claus and the magic of Christmas. But now I have been creating this kit with a completely different purpose. And I must admit that as I created the papers, I was very emotional throughout the day, and I only thought about this sweet family and what they must be going through. I still tried to keep the kit a Christmas theme for you. But to me, the title BELIEVE now means for this sweet family to BELIEVE that they will see their father and husband again. To BELIEVE that they will be happy again. To BELIEVE that peace will come into their lives. I am a firm believer in a Heavenly Father who watches over us and is very aware of our lives, our emotions, our situations...of everything. I am a member of the LDS church and so is Kari and Skyler and their children, and we BELIEVE that families are forever. I lost my mother almost 3 years ago exactly, and I am so grateful to have this knowledge, to know that I will be with my own mother again and live with her one day. And I know that is a comfort to Kari right now.

Ever since my own mother passed, as Christmas has approached I think much more about her then I do about Christmas. I think it must be so difficult for this family...for Kari to have lost her husband, and especially for sweet Slade, Daisy and Maylee to have lost their father. Christmas will mean something very different to them from now on.
I find joy in creating kits. I offer them for free because it is a passion for me to create, and I enjoy that it makes others happy to receive them. I try not to ask much of you ever. But, if any of you are able to, please, I am asking of you, please donate to this family. My hopes would be to raise as much as possible before Christmas because I think it would be a nice gift for them to receive, however, I will continue to let donations come for them through the last day of the year. (To donate, click on the donate button on the top right-hand side of my blog).

Thank you all for being so wonderful. I hope your Christmas is full of happy memories and that you cling to those most precious to you. Never forget to tell them you love them.

P.S. I realize that one of the elements I created in this kit looks like the cute candy cane circle design that Wal-Mart has right now on all of their price tags. I re-created it from scratch because I just loved it.

Oh what a sad story, we know all about it, that in one second your whole life can be completely different. Two years ago our eldest son (13 years) died in an accident. Since then our life is complete different. But..we also believe in God, and we can think our son is in Heaven. You made great papers!

Firstly, my heart goes out to that family. I cannot even imagine the shock and grief they are going through with such a sudden death and young kids :-( My heart breaks. If there is something we can do, let us know.

Secondly, I think this is my favorite kit you've ever made. It's gorgeous! I've requested your permission to use your kits to design my blog a long time ago and wanted to let you know I'll be using this kit as well. Thanks for your hardwork and sharing your talent!

This breaks my heart everytime I hear of another young wife loosing her husband. If she hasn't heard already please tell your sister to have her check out Social Security Benefits. She can get them for her and her kids. It helped me a lot when I lost my husband and was left with 2 kids. I didn't know what I was going to do for money either and that helped me out so I didn't have to go to work in order to take care of my kids. I know all too well of the heart ache. She will be in my thoughts and prayers. Great job on the kit as usual.

I heard about this from my Aunt, who said that his grandparents live near my hometown in AZ. Anyway, such a sad story. I lost my brother almost 3 years ago, who left behind a wife and 5 young children. It is a great comfort to know that we will get to be with our loved ones again. Many prayers to that family. Thanks for giving us a chance to donate to help out a little.

Thank you so much for sharing and doing this for them. If you don't mind, I would love to post about this on my blog and direct them to you! Hopefully more and more people will be able to help!

Thanks so much for doing this Summer!

My heart just aches for Kari. :( I lost my husband last year with 3 small children to raise alone also. The digital scrapbooking community helped me out so much then... so I'm going to "pay it forward" so to speak. It didn't ease the pain of my loss, but it relieved me of a lot of stress- knowing that I didn't have to worry about bills.

I will be praying for Kari and her 3 children.

God bless you for doing this. (((hugs)))

I hate reading about stories like this but I love how it makes people come together to help others. A family friend lost her 18 year old son in a similar situation. It had been raining hard and the wind blew a tree onto his truck while he was stopped at an intersection, also killing him instantly. I am so, so sad for Kari's loss and that of her children and other family members. Thanks for stepping up to help her.

Thank you for sharing this story. My heart and my prayers go out to this young family. I can understand in my own way what they are going through. Forty-five years ago my brothers wife that was 22 died suddenly on Dec. 5th. They had three babies that were 6 months, 20 months and three years old. That Christmas was so very sad for our family. My brother married my best friend three years later and they have had a wonderful life together and she was a wonderful mother to his children. I was blessed to have two wonderful sister-in-laws.
I had such a hard time understanding why God would take a young mother that was loved and needed. Our minister told me that God probably needed a loving mother in heaven to help care for all the babies there. I have always pictured my SIL in heaven surrounded by all the little children. She remains forever young in my memories.
Thank you for sharing "Believe". It is an inspiration and a reminder that we all need to "Believe" that we can find happiness even in the darkest times.
God Bless you and yours.

My heart goes out to this sweet family. We lost my Aunt almost 5 years ago, she was running a 1/2 marathon in Moab, UT and she got about 100 yard from the finish line, collapsed and died. She left behind her husband and 3 young daughters. It was truly one of the hardest things we have ever dealt with as a family.
After Sheri's passing my Aunt Rhonda bought a CTR charm for the girls, but instead of saying "Choose the Right" we changed it to "Choose to Remember". We all have a sign hanging in our homes with that phrase.

To Believe in the magic of Christmas IS to Believe in reunions! We just did a Festival of Trees entry for our little girl, Bridget, who died in 2007. We didn't get an opportunity to have a First Christmas with her, or with her brother Dominic who died 6 years earlier. We won't have any Christmas times together in my lifetime! The inspiration for our Festival of Trees theme, "First Christmas," was to remind us that because there was the First Christmas, we will someday have a First Christmas with my little ones, and be able to celebrate the First Christmas with all our loved ones someday. As part of our entry, I included this quote:

"...there's no question in my mind that life goes on. The whole essence of the Christian religion is based on the atonement of Christ, his death and his resurrection. There would be no Christmas if there was no Easter. The fact that he was resurrected gave credibility to his whole life's mission, and that's the essence of it. We go on living. This is a stage in our eternal journey. We lived before we were here. This is our mortal existence, and we shall go on living after this." ~Gordon B. Hinckley

The enduring through this lifetime without our loved ones, and the tangible hardships we face because of their deaths (such as financial concerns) really is very difficult. It is good to give support, and most important for those IN their lives to mourn WITH this family. I can certainly mourn FOR them, but not knowing them personally, I am just limited. But our Father in Heaven knows each of us, and it is His plan that does give us hope. And a certain comfort to look forward again to those reunions, even if they are a very long lifetime away. When that day comes, it will seem as if we waited a mere moment, and it will be such a wonderful day!
